Media seems to control the debate these days, and media is largely controlled by the parties. I don't think either of the 2 major parties see the need for election reform, at least, not in the non-super-PAC sense! That was a reform... in a bad way! haha

The electoral college is an anachronism put in place by the founding fathers who were unsure we were ready for direct democracy. It is usually just an irritation, so long as the Supreme Court doesn't step in to void the will of the people.
The current Supreme Court majority is also responsible for much of other needed election reform - election finance. The Court erred in expanding the personhood rights of corporations to include free speech and political sponsorship. The purpose of incorporation is to marshall capital for business or service purposes. Corporations cannot vote or run for office. How can they be given rights to campaign for persons or policies? They should be allowed to express their interests in a public and open way not to promote a specific business agenda while hiding behind a "Committee to Restore the American Way" or even some "industry association." A corporation should not have a political voice. Individuals who own, manage or are employed by corporations - like any other citizen - should write to the President, a Senator or a Representative to recommend policy. A corporation, in its own name, might express a policy viewpoint in paid media advertising but it should not be allowed to hide behind a smokescreen, promote a specific politician or party, or dominate discussion of an issue.

I'm a Democrat. But I also believe in free speech. We should know openly and clearly who is exercising their right to free speech, but not doing anything more to curb it than we already have.

I think finance reform is an issue but not the issue. Above all else we need more transparency.

Election Reform ? Are we talking Election Finance or Electoral College representation. Both are getting publicity these days and the challenge is to make sure that once we start talking that we are talking about the right thing
